Cheaper, Faster, and Greener Approach: Hydrogen Fueled Vehicles

Can Hydrogen be your environmentally friendly fuel for your future? The research is progressing rapidly. Futuris went to England and Denmark this week to study hydrogen vehicles.

Anne Devineaux, euronews: “This car is powered by electricity, but there is no battery. Electricity is obtained from the hydrogen contained in the energy. This gas, according to some people, will be the environmentally friendly fuel of the future. ”

Using hydrogen instead of fossil fuels such as gasoline and diesel is one of the best ways to reduce the rate of carbon dioxide gas. A European research project continues to work to improve this technology.

There are only a few hundred hydrogen vehicles in Europe. Denmark is one of the leading countries in this technology. The first state that hydrogen fuel stations spread throughout the country is Denmark.

Tejs Laustsen Jensen, CEO of Hydrogen Denmark: “There is a fuel tank instead of a battery. Here, oxygen reacts with hydrogen to generate electricity and water. It’s a chemical reaction, but only water comes out of the vehicle’s waste pipe. So it’s the only emission … ”

The aim is to build 50 hydrogen stations across Europe by developing the project. The number of vehicles using hydrogen fuel needs to double. When compared to electric vehicles, hydrogen-powered cars have many advantages.

Tejs Laustsen Jensen: “The vehicles are running smoothly and the engine is very quiet. You keep all the advantages of the internal combustion vehicles and it takes only 3-5 minutes to fill the depot when you go to a fuel station. These vehicles can reach up to 600 kilometers with a full tank. ”

One of the objectives of the project is to obtain environmentally friendly hydrogen from renewable sources.

A hydrogen fuel station located in Sheffield, England, has all the necessary equipment. The wind turbines work by electrically dissociating in the water and this system produces the hydrogen needed for the vehicles.

Ben Madden, Project Coordinator, H2ME: “Most of the hydrogen currently used is derived from fossil fuels. However, we want to obtain the hydrogen for transportation and transportation from sources that do not harm nature. With a single cable, we can connect renewable energy sources to the hydrogen generating system and from there to the vehicles. ”

Research is being conducted to electrolyze hydrogen and oxygen, two more elements in the water, in a more efficient way. The hydrogen is separated into a tank, the oxygen is separated into the other tank. The hydrogen is then further purified to facilitate its storage.

This company is doing its work to get pure hydrogen.

Charles Purkless, Business Development Manager: “Using less electricity, we can produce less costly and much more environmentally friendly hydrogen. We can do this everywhere. At a fuel station or wherever you might think … We can get rid of the need for such fuel shipment. ”

One of the biggest challenges is to reduce the cost in the sector. Hydrogen-powered vehicles and this type of fuel are much more expensive than fossil fuel-powered vehicles and …

Ben Madden, Project Coordinator, H2ME: “Our goal is to drive hydrogen-powered cars and the price of this fuel, in 2025 to attract the same cost as today’s vehicles and fuels.”

Will the hydrogen vehicles be able to compete with electric vehicles? TAYS Tejs says that zero-emission vehicle types will grow.

Tejs Laustsen Jensen, Hydrogen Denmark CEO: “The future will be in the next generation of vehicles that use a mix of electricity and hydrogen technology. Already today there are hybrid vehicles that combine hydrogen and electric power. But we must first compete with technology that works with fossil fuels. ”

The aim of the company is to ensure that there are 10 thousand hydrogen vehicles in Europe in the next 10 years.
